5 Fun Things To Know About Dollhouses

You might think that dollhouses are only something that are there to amuse little children. In fact, dollhouses have a long history and there is plenty of amazing trivia around regarding these great structures. To get you into looking dollhouses in a totally different light here are five fun things you should know.

Dollhouse

1. The First Dollhouse

It is thought that the first dollhouse is from 1558 and was commissioned by the Dutch of Bavaria. The duke wanted to give it to his daughter but actually ended up liking it so much that he didn’t let the poor daughter play with it.

The dollhouse was added to a special collection. It is thought that this first dollhouse was very Gothic with its architecture. They really followed the common architectural design at the time and were very specific in following the real life structures with the design choices.

2. Famous Dollhouses

There are plenty of really famous dollhouses and many of the world famous dollhouses are now displayed at museums all around the world. One really famous dollhouse was created by Sir Edwin Lutyens and it was given to Queen Mary in 1924. The dollhouse even has actual small print books by Rudyard Kipling and Galsworthy that you can read with a magnifying glass.

The Fairy Castle is another famous dollhouse. The US president’s mother Mrs James Roosevelt owned it at one point. The interior is designed after the world famous fairy tales such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, for example.

3. Different Designs

It is quite interesting to also note that there are some regional differences to the dollhouse designs. For instance, in the US dollhouses often have a very fancy and polished front while the back is fully open. In the British models the front opens up to reveal the dollhouse. Naturally, there are also some differences in the rooms as well.

4. Standard Models

Many dollhouses today have quite standard models. For children the models are often a little bit smaller than the adult collectable dollhouses. There are plenty of popular models for children that you could consider getting. It also depends a bit on the type of dolls that the child plays with.

Adults can also get excited about dollhouses and they can be really big decorative pieces. You can find readymade dollhouses for adults but many also consider making their own dollhouses.

5. DIY Dollhouses

Nowadays it is really popular to design and make your own dollhouses and the furniture. There are many different online guides for helping you get excited about this hobby as well. You could check out the My Small Obsession website, for example.

Creating your own dollhouse isn’t all that expensive and you can really use your imagination with the model. It is something fun to do together with your children as well.

The above are some of the fun and interesting facts you should know about dollhouses. Dollhouses have really long history and they can be very elaborate in their design. Often they are really just miniature buildings with plenty of details and quirky facts.
