Homemade Bird seed Wedding Favors!

Wedding favors range from simple to elaborate and can be purchased or homemade. An inexpensive option is to simply buy wedding candy and fill a small container — preferably one that matches your color scheme or theme — will the chosen treats. If, however, you want something a bit more unique for your special day, consider creating a homemade bird seed wedding favor.

Making these inexpensive bird seed wedding favors are a great way to say thank you to your guests while being environmentally friendly. All you really need is 3/4 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of water, 1 envelope of unflavored gelatin, 4 cups of birdseed and 3 tablespoons of corn syrup. You should also have on hand a large mixing bowl, nonstick spray, bamboo skewer to make the hole for the ornament, heart-shaped cookie cutter (or any shape you prefer), cookie sheet and parchment paper. You may also want card stock, a rubber stamp with some wedding-related saying or picture on it, raffia or jute, hole punch and rounded corner punch. These five items are required to make the wedding favor but can help spice up the look of the birdseed ornaments.

To begin making your homemade ornaments, spray the inside of the cookie cutter with cooking spray and set aside on the cookie sheet lined with a piece of parchment paper. Next, mix the flour, gelatin and corn syrup together and then add the birdseed stirring for several seconds. Spoon the birdseed mixture into the cookie cutter, pressing the birdseed mixture down into the cookie cutter with greased fingers. The move you press down, the less seed shedding that will occur. Make a small hole near the top of the ornament by inserting the bamboo skewer all the way through the birdseed mixture. Carefully and slowly pull the cookie cutter away from the ornament and place. Continue in this manner until you have made the desired amount of wedding favors. Remember to spray the cookie cutter with cooking spray every four to six favors to help prevent them from sticking.

The birdseed favors will need to dry at least 6 to 8 hours but preferably overnight. While the favors dry, cut out tags from the card stock with scissors and rounded corner punch. Use the rubber stamp and ink to decorate the tags and create a hole near the top with the paper hole punch. Once the favors are dried, simply string the tulle or jute through the tag and favor, and secure with a knot.

What an innovative idea! They really don’t seem too difficult to make and a picture of two lovebirds would just about complete it!

I like that idea. I had heard that rice was not good for birds. We did little containers of bubbles when we got married.

That is so cool that you guys can display a bird feeder in your yard. We can’t display one in ours coz of bears.
