Ivory Science Project!

Ivory Science Project!

Ivory

We were bored and I received some Ivory Soap and I thought about something I seen online and said, YES! Lets try this!  I cut off a little piece of the soap put it on a paper plate and then we nuked it!  It was freaking amazing, I couldn’t believe how huge it got!

Now why does this happen? It;s because the bubbles of air in the soap actually contain some water and when the microwave is turned on the water vaporizes and this forms bubbles and the heat cause the trapped air to expand.   When the temperature of a gas is increases then so will the volume.  When you heat the soap molecules of air move so fast and this causes them to move away from each other. The smallest piece of ivory soap will then puff up and expand to an unbelievable size!  Ivory is the only soap that I have seen that does this.  Other soaps just heat up and melt.

Why does Ivory Soap Float? Do you know the answer to that? From what I read it’s been said that when it was being whipped up, the person went to lunch forgetting to turn off the mixture.   While he was out so much air had been whipped into it, which is what makes it float!  Pretty Cool Huh? 🙂

Can you still wash with it? Like wash your hands? This would be great for homemade soap. Usually you have to grate the bar soap – you could just microwave it and crumble it! Save a mess with the grater!! Color me impressed! (And now I want to try it!)

Oh yay! This is fun to try since I received an Ivory soap. I showed your video to my son and he wanted us to do it too. Glad that you can still use the soap even after microwaving.

I am going to have to try this with my grandkids. They will be like wow. It is amazing how large it grew. I would put the little flakes in bowl on the side of my sink to wash hands with. Lol
