Creative chefs have been cooking in their dishwashers for many years, but the practice only started making it into the mainstream relatively recently. Dishwasher cooking is a great way to save time, energy and valuable oven space. There are many foods that cook well in a tightly sealed container in the dishwasher, freeing up your hob, oven and grill for those more difficult dishes.
1.Vegetables
Put your vegetables into some vacuum packed cooking bags and let them cook in the dishwasher. Vegetables cooked in this way taste much better than boiled vegetables. Add extra flavour by putting a pinch of dill, lemon or peppercorns in the bag with the vegetables.
2. Poached Salmon
Poaching salmon the traditional way requires you to keep a constant eye on the temperature. Why waste time and effort doing that when you can pop it in the dishwasher on a standard 50 minute wash cycle and let the dishwasher manage the temperature for you?
3. Potatoes
Save valuable space in the oven by cooking your potatoes in the dishwasher instead. Be sure to pierce the skins before sealing the tub the potatoes are being cooked in.
4. Beets
Small beets cook very well in the dishwasher. Avoid larger ones, because they can take multiple cycles.
5. Lasagna
Cooking lasagna in the dishwasher takes a little longer than some of the other recipes. Use oven-ready stacks of pasta and pre-sauteed meats. Put the ingredients into an aluminium pouch and run the dishwasher on a full wash and heated dry cycle.
6. Turkey
If you have a lot of washing to do, take advantage of those repeated dishwasher cycles to cook a turkey. Weigh the turkey, and wrap it in a sturdy oven bag. Expect the turkey to need one 50 minute washing cycle for every 2lb it weighs. Test the bird with a meat thermometer before serving, and make sure that its core temperature has reached 165 degrees F.
7. Hot Dogs
Wrap your hot dogs in foil with a dash of butter, and put them in a sealed Tupperware container, then sit back and relax. Hot dogs cooked in this way taste much better than their microwaved or boiled equivalents.
8. Lentil soup
To make a thick lentil soup simply put the lentils into the dishwasher and let the lentils soak for the full length of a dishwasher cycle.
9. Couscous
Couscous is the ultimate convenient health food, and it’s just become even more convenient!
10. Apple pie
Warm your apple pies through in the dishwasher, and finish them with a few seconds under the grill to get a crisp, golden pastry topping.
11. Beef
It is possible to cook beef in the dishwasher, but only if you’re using a very hot cycle. Raw beef must be cooked at a temperature of 50 degrees to ensure that it is safe.
12. Defrost almost anything
If you don’t have a microwave and you need to defrost something fairly quickly, put it on a short dishwasher cycle.
